A Crazy Covid Year Crested Butte Real Estate
2020 has been a crazy year. We have seen changes in all aspects of our lives. The biggest change has been – for most the requirement (and for many the opportunity) to work remotely. Your ability to choose where you work remotely, also affects your decision of where to live. And where to live – takes on new meaning when combined with a changing importance of lifestyle. Lifestyle overlaps with fitness, adventure and the opportunity to create a lifetime of memories with family, friends and clients. If you can live in and work from a remote ski town like Crested Butte the opportunities to enjoy your passions are endless.
Our homes are more important now. The Crested Butte home or second home became a safe haven. More desirable now than before for most – especially those living in urban markets. We saw buyers sit on the sidelines in 2019 and Q1 of 2020 to see what was going to happen after a slight increase in prices after the Vail Resorts acquisition of Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR). Mid-March 2020 we saw the shut-down of the ski area and Gunnison County due to fears of the unknown covid. By the end of May Crested Butte opened back up and by mid-summer buyers were flocking into Crested Butte. The details of the Market Report tell the story – records in Transactions and Volume, most areas and property types show increases in Sold Prices and Price Per Sq. Ft. and the “low-end” of the market especially seeing lack of inventory.

Crested Butte-the last great Colorado ski town offers… the charm and character of Crested Butte is what sets us apart. With our historical downtown, spectacular recreational opportunities of alpine skiing, Nordic skiing, hiking, biking, fly fishing, rafting, golf… We have a great mountain community – so many people with big hearts who volunteer time and effort and money to give back and to support many local organizations. We have hard working business owners, and great locally owned quality restaurants and shops. As I often say to my wife Francene “we get to live here” and we have and continue to create a lifetime of friendships and memories.
For some the pandemic was the catalyst that inspired them to make the change and become part of the Crested Butte community. The opportunity to skin-up the mountain and watch the sun rise in the morning – go home, jump in the steam shower, then and get on a Zoom Call with co-workers or clients around the world. For others the opportunity to sell and turn the page and move on from Crested Butte and start a new chapter in their lives.

The good news is there is lots of Land for buyers to consider building their dream home on, and great architects and builders here in Crested Butte. It can take 2 – 3 years to build, so some Buyers are buying Land plus considering a condo/townhome to have immediate pillows to put their heads on. The other option for many buyers is to find the home and location they love, and plan a remodel project.
