A Chat With Tim Baker VP/General Manager CBMR
As the speaker coordinator for the local crested Butte Mountain, Crested Butte Rotary Club – I recently had Tim Baker VP/General Manager at Crested Butte Mountain Resort come speak to us and it was very informative. I was really impressed with Tim Baker, who’s the vice president, general manager for CBMR / Vail Resorts.
Tim of course said all of the things that you’d expect from a guy who’s running the ski area, but I think he was very genuine. He and his family are super excited to be here.
He said he had a lot of calls from people when the announcement was made that he was going to be taking over in Crested Butte and they said: “You’re the luckiest guy”. And he feels that way and is really excited to have he and his family here.
The Lifts
He did say they were not really sure what they were getting into in Crested Butte, and the state of the lifts. But using an aviation analogy he said: “you have to deal with the situation and fly the plane”.
He said the fact that the silver queen lift went down for an extended number of days was just not something that happened at a Vail ski resort. Vail really prides themselves on their quality of service and all the things that they do for their customers. Customer experience is top priority.
They are really going to Focus this spring and this summer to make sure that the lifts are in pristine condition and there’ll be quite a bit of work, that’s going to be done on the lifts.
Marketing Crested Butte
One of the things I thought was very interesting in his talk was regarding their marketing strategy. It didn’t really seem that they were focusing or would be focusing in the future on the socioeconomic demographic of the Crested Butte visitor, but more on skier ability. Meaning as a company that’s focused on collecting a lot of data they will be exposing Crested Butte to the EPIC pass holders that are expert / extreme skiers. He used the example of some of the lifts at Whistler – they know which EPIC skier customers frequent those lifts and they will likely see Crested Butte information.
Conversely, they probably won’t market crested Butte to their existing Vail and Beaver Creek demographic because those people, don’t align necessarily with Crested Butte. So that was an interesting comment and we’ll see where their marketing goes and what we see in the future.
They also collect that data to help them to do a better job of managing the traffic on the mountain, the ski resort and the experience for the end user skier.
It was great to have Tim Baker comes speak and to listen to his enthusiasm and all the things, that they’re very excited about including the TEO II expansion. So that’s great news and I look forward to more information coming out of Vail with regard to the lifts and what will happen this summer… it sounds like they’re going to be very active up on the mountain.
How Will Vail Affect Crested Butte Real Estate Market?
With Vail operating the Crested Butte ski resort I predict we will continue to see an influx of new visitors to CB and the numbers always translate into real estate buyers. This summer will be busier than the winter, and expectations are high that there will be more families. I still believe the Vail acquisition is good – but it may take a year or more to see tangible results in the real estate market.
