Access to Hiking Trails Buying Crested Butte Home
The summer is a fantastic time to go out exploring in Crested Butte. You will find mountain streams with native cutthroat trout you did not know existed. Hiking trails off the beaten path that lead to beautiful mountain lakes. Waterfalls or meadows filled with high alpine wild flowers. It can be a special moment to spot a herd of elk moving up high in the mountains during the summer, or a mother moose and her calf grazing in a wetland drainage.
While most people think of Crested Butte as a ski town, there is plenty to do in the summer as well. Some people even prefer the outdoor activities available in the summer like hiking and biking. If this is what’s important to you you may be looking for a home that has direct access to hiking trails. But don’t worry that the hiking trails are limited to summer time use. Usually they are also fantastic for winter activities.
Home Location to Hiking Trails
Crested Butte offers access to hundreds of miles of backcountry hiking and biking in the summer. The option to “hike right out your back door” appeals to many people. Getting onto a trail quickly and easily is a nice amenity, especially with guests. This eliminates the need to pile everyone into a vehicle (or two) and drive to the trailhead. You will probably still do this because there are so many trails to explore, but it reduces the number of moving parts. It is not uncommon for developments or subdivisions to be adjacent or “below” National Forest land. This means easy access to this land for the owners in the subdivision but not the general public. Check to see if there is public access or easements through the development for access.
Visiting Crested Butte in the Summer and Winter
Many clients I work with will take multiple trips to Crested Butte in search for their mountain dream home. It can be helpful to see Crested Butte in the summer and in the winter, as snow can affect your perspective. Also, visiting Crested Butte during the times you are most likely to spend time there can be insightful. It lets you see how crowded the area is, or what the average temperatures are. In general, it will be ten to fifteen degrees warmer up higher on the mountain in the morning than on the valley floor (inversion). But temperatures in the Rocky Mountains can be deceiving. Just like the lack of humidity produces champagne powder, so does the dry cold make it feel warmer than the thermometer says, especially on a clear blue sunny day with no wind.
Hiking Trails in the Winter
Don’t feel like the value of a hiking trail is lost in the winter time. This is precisely why it’s so important to visit Crested Butte and mountain home during all seasons. You may be pleasantly surprised to find that the summer hiking trail you like is a groomed Nordic trail in the winter and vice versa. It’s also possible to use the trails to go fat tire biking on the snow during the winter.
Many trails or dirt roads that you hike or bike on in the summer may offer great options for Nordic skiing in the winter. If the trail is groomed, then both classic Nordic (cross country) skiing as well as skate skiing will be options. It is nice to be able to hike or ski back to the house if the temperatures drop and you or your guests are tired or cold. With a hiking trail nearby you can enjoy outdoor activities year-round!
