Check out my interview with Executive Director Chris Hensley to find out more about why the Adaptive Sports Center in Crested Butte is getting a new facility.
About the Adaptive Sports Center
The Adaptive Sports Center in Crested Butte is a unique non-profit. They have a facility at the base area of Crested Butte Ski area as well as in town. Every winter and summer hundreds of disabled participants of all levels and abilities travel to Crested Butte from around the world to get to experience the Crested Butte outdoors in a fun, exciting and safe way. The Adaptive Sports Center provides high-quality outdoor recreation for people with disabilities. The Adaptive Sports Center’s staff is highly trained and extremely knowledgeable in the field of adaptive recreation. They have excellent equipment to allow participants to experience many different activities. They believe each individual is unique, and therefore each adaptation is approached with a fresh perspective. Because of this, all participants get the individual attention they deserve in order to have an amazing outdoor adventure.
Expanding and Building the New Facility
The Adaptive Sports Center has been around for over 30 years old and has been growing every year and getting bigger. And finally a few years ago they just didn’t have the space and the facility space to accommodate everyone. It was decided that the Adaptive Sports Center in Crested Butte needed a new facility. The board organization got together along with many donors to raise $14 million. This has given them an unbelievable ability to serve so many more people. The building is slated to be done by June 2019 with a grand opening on July 2nd!
Extra Funding Needed
There’s always funding needs even though they did raise the $14 million to fund the Kelsey Wright building. They are now trying to raise a little more money for furniture, fixtures and equipment. Everyone really wants this facility to be first class. The new building also will allow the winter program to double in size. Because the winter program is nonprofit they will need to raise more money to fund that. Especially as the programs and activities continue to grow.
A Look Inside the New Building
There is a large new program area where students come and meet their instructors for the first time. This is where students are outfitted with their skis. This facility is also ski-in/ski-out so whether clients are sitting down or standing up, they will be able to go right out onto the slopes. This way they’ll have that much more energy to smash it out on the slopes rather than messing around inside!
The new facility also incorporates an industrial style kitchen and dining area to serve the groups. This kitchen is also going to be used to provide more programming for clients in terms of nutrition and some cooking classes in the evening. It also serves as a source of inspiration for some of the clients who are more recently injured. They can see how this kitchen is set up and get ideas for them to take to their homes and modify their homes.
The Adaptive Sports Center will now also house residents as there is a floor dedicated to a groups. Throughout the season they will be able to host two groups at the same time in the building. A rooftop deck has also been added with beautiful views of Crested Butte that guests and their friends and family can enjoy.
