Mt. Crested Butte is the home of the Crested Butte Mountain Resort (CBMR) and a local population of about 800 residents. This population swells in the winter with many seasonal residents, and visitors who come to experience the awesome lift served skiing that is Mt Crested Butte. It is a short 3 mile drive or free shuttle (or bike ride) from the town of Crested Butte to the base area of the ski resort. Here you will find a bevy of activity in the winter ski season from mid November until early April. With hotels, conference facilities, condos, ski shops, restaurants, and bars all of your winter alpine skiing or boarding accommodations are conveniently located at the base of the mountain and just steps from the lifts.
CBMR opened in 1960 when two men – Fred Rice and Dick Eflin – purchased a ranch on Mt. Crested Butte. An operating permit enabling the resort to be built was approved by the United States Forest Service the following year. Now decades later CBMR offers 16 lifts, serving over 1,165 acres of skiable terrain. The primary access to the mountain is via two high speed quads conveniently located at the base area, plus two other chair lifts that provide additional ski-in/ski-out access to base area condos.
