The Arts in Crested Butte

Crested Butte Center for The Arts New BuildingThe arts are an important part of the life in Crested Butte and the Center for the Arts is a hub for arts that brings people together.  For more than 25 years the Center for the Arts has been providing a year-round schedule of live music, dance and theater performances as well as art exhibits, speakers and much more.

The Crested Butte Second Homeowners Support The Arts in Crested Butte

The reality is there are so many people in the second-homeowner community that are the backbone of supporting all aspects of the Arts in Crested Butte.  This funding is key not only for the support of the operational costs, but also the new venues that are planned. Every musician who played at the Mile High Music Festival, and every film shown at the Crested Butte Film Festival, and every child dancer enrolled in the Crested Butte School of Dance has to have a venue to perform in – and a facility that can comfortably accommodate the patrons.

Crested Butte Center for The Arts New BuildingThere is a group of very generous individuals who have invested in Crested Butte Real Estate – but their investment and support of Crested Butte does not stop there.  These people are giving back to our Crested Butte community in a big way.

They are on the boards of our Crested Butte Non-Profits, they help with fundraising, they help with logistics and planning of events,  they organize and promote gala events, they open their homes for Tour de Forks fundraising events, and other private parties. Their contributions will benefit all for years to come.

I want to say: “THANK YOU!” to the many people who have made significant contributions to support The Center for the Arts, and other non-profits, capital campaigns and the community in Crested Butte.

The Crested Butte Mountain Lifestyle

Crested Butte Center for The Arts New BuildingThe Crested Butte mountain lifestyle means something different to every person. In general, it is a more laid-back feel than the big city. The conversations you will have at the end of the day will be about the great adventures and fun times you had, and what excursion is on the schedule for tomorrow.

The pace is slower in a mountain town, and it is not unusual to sit on a bench on Elk Avenue in town next to a stranger and find yourself in a wonderful conversation. Mountain towns attract a diverse demographic, and the socio-economic and political views of some may differ from yours. There is also diversity in the many seasonal recreational activities, as well as interesting performing arts in mountain towns.

When you start to look at the calendar of events, you will be surprised at how many are available. Most of the things you will find yourself doing are not options in your primary residence locale (or those of your family and guests).

The quality of the lifestyle and the amenities in our  town is one of the pillars our our tourism economy and what makes Crested Butte special. Our visitors get excited about a strong arts culture, and giving back through capital campaigns to build a new facility, supporting local non-profits, and getting involved..

In addition to the permanent residents who enjoy the performances and events at The Center for the Arts, many visitors and second homeowners realize that the value of Crested Butte Real Estate is tied to the amenities in the Crested Butte area – and the Arts are key.

Crested Butte Center for The Arts New BuildingAbout the Crested Butte Center for the Arts

The Center for the Arts is very important to the Crested Butte Community.  Many second homeowners are very generous with their contributions and without this support the Center and the programs as we know it would not exist.  The Arts are vital to the lifeblood of the community and make a huge economic impact to Crested Butte and the Gunnison Valley.

The Center for the Arts Mission Statement:  As a home for arts and culture, The Center for the Arts offers engaging opportunities and educational experiences to enrich and expand the life of our community.

Here is some info from the Center for the Arts website about their history and mission

The History of the Center for The Arts in Crested Butte

In 1985 a determined group of Crested Butte residents converted a county maintenance garage into a community arts center. Today, that same building has been pushed beyond its capacity to try to fulfill the changing cultural needs of the community.
Over the last thirty years, the local population has doubled, and there has been tremendous growth in the number of events presented, the size of audiences, and the number and variety of educational programs provided by the Center for the Arts and its partner organizations. Two community organizations, the Crested Butte School of Dance and Crested Butte Mountain Theater, inspired the creation of the Center for the Arts. Today, twelve community groups utilize and benefit from the Center. Less than 8,000 people attended Center events in 1985, while last year over 40,000 people attended over 650 events, positively impacting the local economy by more than $3 million.
