Crested Butte COVID-19 Updates
Crested Butte COVID-19 Updates- I hope you and your family are safe and healthy.
It has only been a week since Vail announced the Closure of the Crested Butte ski area – and the beginning of the shut-down of Crested Butte and the world due to the Coronavirus COVID-19. It feels like a month.
Crested Butte is shut-down. Gunnison County is shut-down. There is a Health Order that has cancelled and restricted all short-term rentals/lodging, required visitors to leave and all non-essential retail/restaurants are closed, no gatherings of 10 or more people…, or face a $5,000 fine or up to 18 months in prison. Crazy.
Shut down for Spring Break was a big blow to Crested Butte – we are an economy that is supported by tourism and visitors. Spring Break 2020 was important for so many local businesses who rely on this time to generate up to 20% of the annual income.
The circle of life from big to small… Everyone who is dependent on the visitor’s dollar and physically serving the general public are affected from the ski resort, the Center for the Arts, the movie theater, the local retail business owners, restaurants, and the workers who work in these businesses. These workers service the visitors and they are ski instructors and waiters, and property managers and cleaning services… Also affected are the sales tax revenues to the towns.
With any influx of Crested Butte visitors there is also a subset of interested real estate buyers which fuels showings of homes, and offers, and contracts that turn into closings 30 – 60 days out… this activity was also shut-down.
Crested Butte Construction – since it takes approximately 24 months to build a custom home in the Crested Butte area, there are still crews of skilled builders and subcontractors who are still at work on the homes they are building. Time will tell if any new projects get put on hold as most foundations are started in the warming spring months.
COVID-19 Numbers — As of this writing Gunnison County is reporting 18 cases confirmed, 77 tests outstanding, and 405 people are “self-reported as symptomatic”.
60 Years+ Shopping Hours – Clarks, City Market, Safeway and Wal-Mart stores are opening special hours for seniors 60+ years old.

Crested Butte Self-Isolation
People here are self-isolating, and still getting outside to enjoy the beauty of the Crested Butte area – if only to walk the dog.
Francene and I have gotten out of the house to skin-up the mountain and enjoyed some fresh powder… The new snow unfortunately also prompted CBMR to announce the closure of the resort to everyone for safety / liability issues…
“Uphill access is currently CLOSED on all portions of Crested Butte Mountain Resort until further notice. We love fresh snow too, but without ski patrol and terrain maintenance it is unsafe for skiers, riders, those sledding and first responders. Thank you for respecting all posted closures.”
We would have had 4 additional weeks of spring skiing and winter fun… then the normal off-season mud season quiet time until people start showing up late May and June.
Let’ pray that the Malaria drugs are a proven cure. That this crazy virus shut-down will pass quickly, and recovery will follow. That you can return to Crested Butte this summer to beautiful wildflowers, hiking, biking, golf, fly fishing, events, Alpenglow concerts, great meals and fun with family and friends.
