Crested Butte Native Aaron Blunck Makes Olympic Team!
A huge Crested Butte Congratulations to Aaron Blunck who will be competing in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics in the Men’s Ski Halfpipe competition!! 17 year old Blunck sealed the deal Saturday in Park City with yet another podium appearance – placing second in the final competition and earning enough points to earn a much heralded spot on the Olympic team!
This is also the first ever US Olympic Freeskiing Team – Ski half-pipe is a thrilling spectator sport that probably should have been included when organizers accepted snowboarding. The explanation was simply that there weren’t the numbers in ski half-pipe as there were in snowboarding. This event is new to the Winter Olympics. Most people are familiar with half pipe snowboard star Shaun White – and what he does on a halfpipe – now, replace that snowboard with a set of skis and Aaron Blunck. The skiiers perform a series of high-flying crazy flips, twists, and grabs. The Sochi Olympics Opening Ceremonies are Friday February 7th – and the games run through Sunday February 23rd. Mark your calendar and set your DVR – the Men’s Sochi Olympics Ski Halfpipe competition is scheduled for Tuesday February 18th. In the Olympic competition there is a qualifying round followed by a final round. The gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded to whoever has the most points in the final round.
Congratulations also go out to another Crested Butte resident – Dr. Gloria Beim of Alpine Orthopaedics (where I recently had bunion surgery). Very exiting news that Crested Butte and the USA will be represented by Dr. Gloria Beim who will be the Chief Medical Officer for Team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia! Dr. Beim, will be responsible for three clinics and 77 health care practitioners providing care for 235 Olympic athletes at the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games.Another Crested Butte Olympic hopeful – Davide Chodounsky of Crested Butte, CO is poised to lead the US Ski Team in Slalom at the Sochi Olympic Games. Chodounsky finished a team-best 8th at Adelboden in Switzerland on Sunday, January 12. Chodounsky is a 2007 NCAA champion and is poised to lead the US Ski Team in Slalom at the Sochi Olympic Games. The Men’s Slalom US Ski Team for Sochi is officially named January 26.
These athletes and the people of Crested Butte, CO are another thing that makes Crested Butte a special place. Often referred as “the last great Colorado ski town” Crested Butte has a great history of unbelievable athletes and alpine skiing.
