If you are considering a Vacation Home in Colorado, Crested Butte is a great choice. Dubbed the last great ski town it has mining roots, awesome skiing, wonderful summers, and a Historic Downtown. If you are thinking about Downtown Crested Butte for your Second Home – and still unsure where to be in downtown, there are many choices in location. Even thought downtown Crested Butte is small, and price per square foot is a bit higher than some other areas in Crested Butte, there are many distinct areas where you could buy a great single family home. The main business district area (near Elk Avenue and West of 6th Street) has many options and you will be a very short walk to the restaurants and shops which is nice. Many of these homes are older , and have been remodeled (some were originally built in the late 1800’s at the Irwin townsite – and moved to downtown). Sometimes the noise at night or parking in front of your home can be a challenge, but this is not New York City, and the convenience is desirable. There are some nice homes on the Northwest corner of town, and in 2011 a flurry of high-end homes sold in the coveted Kapushion subdivision. Many like this area because of the beautiful views up Paradise Divide, the larger lots and homes, and access to Peanut Lake Road, the Lower loop, and Nordic skiing in the winter. I have taken clients to view homes on this side of town and some did not care for the block of mobile homes located in this area. The residents of these mobile homes are some of Crested Butte’s finest – business owners, police officers, volunteer firemen, town council members… but for some the visual clutter is the issue.
The East side of town on the other side of 6th Street and the park is a very nice & sunny section of town. There are some newer homes in the Verzuh Ranch subdivision, and in general these homes sit on larger lots and have nice views of the open space and of Mt. Crested Butte. This area is desirable because you are far removed from the noise of the business district and do not have to drive through town to access your home. There is the town park by the Center for the Arts, Rainbow park and a couple of pocket parks close by – as well easy access to Tony’s Trail and Nordic Skiing in the winter.
