Mountain High Music Fest Crested ButteThe Mountain High Music Fest Crested Butte is a special event. If you attended any of the evenings this year – you will know how cool it is to be in a very small venue, with big talent.

The songwriters and singers were happy to be here in Crested Butte, and we were stoked to listen to their Mountain High Music Fest Crested Buttestories and hear them sing their songs.  We laughed and sang, and stood and cheered, and danced to some great country music in Crested Butte.

Dean Dillon is the inspiration and drive behind this great event. Dean and his wife Susie own a ranch here in the Gunnison Valley. As an award winning songwriter Dean Dillon has been inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and written many many number one songs for George Strait, George Jones, Lee Ann Womack, and this year’s headliner Toby Keith among others.

Mountain High Music Fest Crested ButteBecause of Dean Dillon these top songwriters and singers come here to Crested Butte to perform, have a great time – and help raise money that stays in the Gunnison Valley. The two non-profit partners this year were Cattlemen’s Days Tough Enough to Wear Pink (supporting Breast Cancer treatment services and equipment at the Gunnison Hospital), and Adaptive Sports Center – giving people with disabilities the opportunity to experience the outdoors in Crested Butte.

Mountain High Music Fest Crested ButteI “worked security” on Wednesday eve for the VIP event – and my wife Francene and I attended the Mountain High Music Fest. As a regular listener to Sirius/XM Radio and The Highway it is neat to meet and talk with one if the long-time DJs Storme Warren who has a place in his heart for Crested Butte. He is originally from Tulsa, OK and has been coming here for 24 years.

The highlight was certainly Saturday evenings performances. First up was Dean Dillon, William Michael Morgan, and then Kellie Pickler (who was on American Idle in 2006). The last performance by Toby Keith and Scotty Emerick – they told stories about the songs they have written, traveling with the USO and performing for the Troops.

Toby Keith was wearing his Oklahoma Sooners (OU) hat and talked of his simple upbringing in Oklahoma – working as a kid for a rodeo and the influence for many of his patriotic songs. BMI Records is the main sponsor and presented Toby, Scotty and Dean with a very special award for over 4 Million performances of the song “I Love This Bar” that the three wrote together many years ago

They played #1 hits (“Should’ve Been A Cowboy“, “Beer for My Horses“…) and some of their favorite songs that never made it to the top of the charts. “I’ll Never Smoke Weed with Willie Again” about Willie Nelson was one of their very funny stories and songs…

What makes Crested Butte special?

People often ask me “What makes Crested Butte special?” It is always hard to put into words, but being having a destination event like the Mountain High Music Festival is one of the very cool things that adds to this label. It was great to sit in the audience and talk with the artists and attendees of this event rave about the beauty, and the character and charm of Crested Butte. They immediately recognized what we know – that the setting, the events and most of all the people make Crested Butte a cool, fun and quality place to be.

The Crested Butte Mountain Lifestyle

Crested Butte Center for The Arts New BuildingThe Crested Butte mountain lifestyle means something different to every person. In general, it is a more laid-back feel than the big city. The conversations you will have at the end of the day will be about the great adventures and fun times you had, and what excursion is on the schedule for tomorrow.

The pace is slower in a mountain town, and it is not unusual to sit on a bench on Elk Avenue in town next to a stranger and find yourself in a wonderful conversation. Mountain towns attract a diverse demographic, and the socio-economic and political views of some may differ from yours. There is also diversity in the many seasonal recreational activities, as well as interesting performing arts in mountain towns.

When you start to look at the calendar of events, you will be surprised at how many are available. Most of the things you will find yourself doing are not options in your primary residence locale (or those of your family and guests).

The quality of the lifestyle and the amenities in our  town is one of the pillars our our tourism economy and what makes Crested Butte special. Our visitors get excited about a strong arts culture, and giving back through capital campaigns to build a new facility, supporting local non-profits, and getting involved..

In addition to the permanent residents who enjoy the performances and events, many visitors and second homeowners realize that the value of Crested Butte Real Estate is tied to the amenities in the Crested Butte area – and events like the Mountain High Music Festival and the Arts are key.
