MY CRESTED BUTTE HOME BUYING EXPERIENCE

My Crested Butte Home Buying Experience wasn’t easy or perfect, but it led to amazing memories I’ll cherish forever!

It all started with one of my older brothers asking me if I’d be interested in building a home in the mountains with three other couples. It caught my attention at first. But I thought it would be a disaster with that many couples! Two of the couples backed out. Thank goodness.

My brother Rick and I then decided to go on a ski trip and do some research of our own. We both were married and had three children under ten at the time, but ended up going on the trip just the two of us. My brother planned a four-day ski trip to Crested Butte, Colorado. We were really thinking about getting that mountain home we had been talking about. And hey, if we didn’t enjoy it in a few years, then we would just sell it. Our thoughts at the time were that we would rather build than buy.

Rick had experience building two homes before, so we thought it’d be a great idea to get exactly what we wanted. We could have two master bedrooms if we both were there at the same time. He was a successful real estate attorney, so he contacted a real estate agent and architect while we were there. We looked at many mountain lots by the ski-runs and met with the architect to go over the costs, details of the building, timeframe, etc.

On around day 3, we decided it was going to be a little too expensive and complex to build our mountain home. Kinda upsetting…We then drove around again and noticed a home for sale that we had seen before. It was located on Mt. Crested Butte near the Crested Butte ski-in/ski-out. We called our real estate agent at the time to see if we could take a look. Unfortunately, we weren’t able to, as there were renters in there at the time.

We thought of our options. I was a salesman then…so we went to the liquor store, bought a 12 pack of beer and two bottles of wine. We showed up at the house, knocked on the door, they saw us with the alcohol and let us in. We explained we wanted to walk through the home for only five minutes and we would be gone. They were fine with that. We went through the home, decided it would work, and called the agent to meet and put an offer on the home!

My brother and I went back to Dallas with an offer pending! But then we told our wives. “What!? You put an offer on a ski house in Crested Butte and WE haven’t seen it?!” Ooopsss…

We replied, ” Yes, and how can you be mad at us for buying you a ski home in Crested Butte?” HA!

We bought that mountain home in Crested Butte and shared it for six years! We had so many memories there with our family, kids, and friends. It was a great journey. We divided up the calendar, alternated holidays, invited friends/coworkers/clients. We noticed we rarely spent time together in our new mountain home though.

Present Life In Crested Butte

After those 6 wonderful years, my wife and I bought and sold two lots (planned to build on them but didn’t) and then bought our second home which we now live in full-time.

Fast forward and I am a Crested Butte Real Estate Agent. I have had the opportunity to work with hundreds of people and introduce them to the wonders of mountain living. I have represented and still represent many people that consider mountain homes as a place to share with others so they can create special memories with the family, friends, and clients.

There can be many challenges of searching, selecting, buying, and maintaining a second home in the mountains, but it can be so rewarding. There are lots of great mountain towns and mountain ski towns out there. But Crested Butte is where I ended up staying and is the perfect place for me and my family.
