Ride the Rockies Coming to Crested Butte!
The 34th annual Ride the Rockies is beginning and ending in Crested Butte in 2019! Starting June 9th around 2000 cyclists will participate in a 7 day cycling tour and explore Colorado on two wheels. The event helps support non-profits throughout Colorado and specifically the host towns of the tour. Ride the Rockies has several partners and sponsors, including the Adaptive Sports Center.
People participate individually or as a team. This year’s route is 445 miles long with an elevation gain of 28,000 feet. There is also a One Day Loop on Sunday June 9th for those who want to join but the full tour is too much. That route is almost 70 miles with a 3261 foot elevation gain and loops in and out of Gunnison.
What is Ride the Rockies?
Ride the Rockies is an annual event organized by the Denver Post. They created the first Ride the Rockies Colorado Bicycle Tour in 1986 and have held this tour every June since then. The route is different every year and this year the trip begins and ends in Crested Butte. For a while a lottery system was implemented to ensure everyone had a fair chance of participating. But this year the event has returned to a first come, first serve basis.
In 2011 the Denver Post started a new organization, the Denver Post Community Foundation and Ride the Rockies became their signature event. The Denver Post Community Foundation helps support nonprofit agencies that work to improve the lives of Coloradans in the towns hosting Ride The Rockies. Because the routes are different every year many different communities and towns can be served.

People often ask me “What Makes Crested Butte Special?”
Ride the Rockies is definitely one of the things that makes Crested Butte special! Although the route doesn’t pass through Crested Butte every year it has come through this amazing mountain town before in 2015, 2011, 2005 and 2001 and I’m sure it will return. I think the Ride the Rockies event is just one more amazing thing that will provide visitors another cool experience. With endless open space and recreational opportunities your adventures in Crested Butte are limitless.
