The first weekend my wife and I spent in Crested Butte was Vinotok in 1999. We had no idea what was going on and why – but it was an introduction to the character and uniqueness of that which is Crested Butte. Vinotok celebrates the end of Summer, the blessing of the Fall Harvest, the burning of the Grump represents those things in your life you would like to rid yourself of – symbolic of throwing these character defects or grievances thing into the fire to make room for what you want in the new year.
Most of the traditions are replicated from the ancient European and Slovenian and Celtic times and given a Crested Butte spin. Crested Butte has deep mining history and many of the early residents here were descendants from Scandinavian countries where some of these traditions were said to have originated. This event and the rituals have a Pagan history, but so does Halloween.
I think Vinotok in Crested Butte means something different to everyone – for many including my daughters the opportunity to dress up as a maiden, don a head wreath mad of branches and aspen leaves is all the rage. For many it is just a party, and a chance to dance in the streets and have fun. Certainly the bonfire is impressive – and most who don’t follow any other part of the week will come to see this spectacle. Vinotok in Crested Butte has changed over the years, and now there are events throughout the whole week – there is an official theater troupe that performs at various times including at Farmers Market on Elk Avenue on Sunday, there is a Liar’s contest on Thursday, a community harvest feast Friday night, but the main event is the bonfire Saturday night behind the Chamber of Commerce. The events on Saturday eve begin on Elk Avenue, there is a story that is acted out, lots of torches, parades, cheers and then the walk or parade taking the Grump down Elk to the bonfire site behind the Chamber of Commerce.
Many real estate clients have told me they appreciate the people, the events, the beauty and the genuine nature of Crested Butte community. Vinotok is one of many fun events that makes Crested Butte special, and contributes to the reasons to choose Crested Butte over the myriad of other larger ski towns. If you are making a decision as to where to buy your mountain dream home – the Crested Butte Real Estate Market offers great value, many choices in homes, condos, and price points. It is hard to go wrong in this market, and I appreciate the opportunity to help you understand the nuances of Vinotok or which ski-in/ski-out home offers you the best location and value for you and your family.
