Whether you are in Crested Butte to ski, hike, bike, float, fish, looking for Real Estate (call me!) or just chill – when it comes to visiting Crested Butte and trying to decide which restaurant to chose – it can be a challenge… Why? Because there are so many great places – all offer great local unique food and flare, in charming downtown Crested Butte… Here are some of my family’s favorite restaurants in downtown Crested Butte: Maxwells Steakhouse – Enjoy fine dining and a great atmosphere – Peter and Molly Maxwell make every guest feel like family and the staff does also. Located right on Elk Avenue in the middle of town. Steaks, goat cheese appetizer, large wine cellar. Wooden Nickel – a Crested Butte Tradition with large portions, great food and neat bar setting. Also located on Elk in the heart of downtown. Owner Eric Roemer is a great guy, and long-time restaurant owner in town. Rainbow trout is my favorite here. Marchitelli’s Gourmet Noodle – one of my wife’s favorites for great Italian food. Say hello to owner Mike and watch the action in the kitchen as you wait for your table. I am partial to the Lasagna, but also Chicken Parmesan. Located a half a block off Elk on 3rd Street. The Secret Stash – Great gourmet pizza and a kids favorite. Get there early to sit on the floor at the coveted tables on the second floor. Kids will enjoy the special smoothie drinks, and mom will appreciate the nice salads. Try the fig & goat cheese pizza – sounds weird, tastes great. Get there early (like 5:00pm). Lil’s Sushi Bar & Grill – I am not a big Sushi guy, but it is excellent here – plus there are many non-Sushi items on the menu. Our girls love the “sizz-rolls” and the Hot Rock appetizer (you cook your meat or chicken) on a heated flat rock – cool. Located on Elk Avenue between 4th and 3rd just down from the Museum. The Last Steep – it may not have the best curb appeal, but the food is great, reasonably priced, and deserts are home-made. They are famous for their bloody mary’s and key lime pie. Say hello to brothers Sean & Kevin who are the owners from Kansas City. Donita’s Cantina – If you have a big hungry group to feed and looking for good food at a more affordable price point Donitas is a great option. You will likely be greeted by either Kay or Helli-May (sisters). Fajitas, Tortilla Soup and home-made ice cream and cobbler are favorites! Breakfast & Lunch – there are three great options in town that you might want to consider for breakfast or lunch Paradise Cafe – long-time owner Lee runs a great restaurant with decent food, a view of passerbyers on Elk Avenue and warm friendly service. Sit on the deck on a warm day and enjoy a large menu of choices. Located in the Company Store on Elk & 3rd. McGill’s – A renovation a number of years ago brought back the charm of this building and neat setting on Elk Avenue. Eggs Benedict are a favorite for breakfast, and tuna melt for lunch. They also have great milkshakes that are a favorite of young and old kids! Izzy’s – Probably the smallest best restaurant in town… it will appear too crowded, but the line moves fast and people are accommodating to share tables – cozy dining with people you don’t know, but will get to know quickly… Fresh bagels and well prepared food in a cool spot – behind the Post Office and The Brick Oven. Gas Cafe – if you are looking for a homemade Egg McMuffin breakfast sandwich to go – this is your place. Call ahead – Order the McStop with Bacon, get a cup of coffee (they brew Camp4) and give owner Eric and his crew a tip and they will ring the bell and say “thank you!”. Others to not miss – Teocalli Tamale (or just “Teos”) has burritos made to order, Pitas in Paradise for great Gyros and now has a soup bar, The Brick Oven has a great deck, solid pizza the smallest of salad plates, and nice atmosphere, Camp4 Coffee has cornered the coffee market and the Americano is HOT and strong.
