Crested Butte Restaurant Uley’s Cabin

If you are looking for fine dining to entertain your family, friends or clients while in Crested Butte – Uley’s Cabin is a good choice.    Nestled among the pines at the base of the twister chairlift halfway up the Crested Butte Ski Resort, this cozy restaurant prepares upscale Colorado cuisine seven days a week.  Hungry skiers and snowboarders can slide right up to enjoy a delicious lunch at Uley’s Cabin.  Over Christmas this year, we had family and friends in town and this was a special treat for dinner – the sleigh ride up and back was fun and invigorating under big heavy blankets.  Uley’s is also a special place for lunch, I have brought clients here for a nice 0n-mountain lunch, and my wife and I have enjoyed a Valentines Day lunch here for the past 3 years as well.

Uley Scheer

Uley’s Cabin is named after local bootlegger and historical figure Uley Scheer.  He was well-known as a provider of both food and moonshine and is the inspiration for the restaurant.  Uley was unusual for his generation, and instead of having the burly image of a mountain man he was a tall, elegant man with a trimmed beard and long, clean, white hair.

Uley Scheer was an excellent cook and supplied the local community with their spirits.  Unfortunately, he unknowingly supplied a local policeman with moonshine, which led to his detention at the Gunnison County Jail.  He’s a legendary character that is commemorated in one of the most eclectic dining destinations in Crested Butte.

About the Restaurant

The restaurant has the feel of a European chalet.  It boasts spectacular views of the mountain peaks surrounding the ski resort.  Inside the open dining room you’ll be treated to exposed beams and white tablecloths, and leather furniture alongside a stone fireplace.  The famous Ice Bar sits in front of the restaurant, and here skiers can ski up to the bar and order a drink – and this is a fun meeting place toward the end of the day.

Uley’s has a wonderful array of menu items.  Start out with Smoked Trout Manage Trios with rainbow trout and caramelized onion ravioli, trout mousseline, and roasted trout potato cake; or sample the Charcuterie Plate with a variety of cheeses and wild game sausage.

Some of the delectable entrees include Uley’s Signature Colorado Elk Bourguignon slow braised elk stew, Apple Wood Smoked Beef Tenderloin with roasted shallot red wine demi glace, and Duck Two Ways with roasted duck breast and duck leg confit with huckleberry sauce.  Top of your meal with Uley’s famous Chocolate Bread Pudding.

Sleighride Dinner at Uley’s Cabin

For a truly unique dining experience, why not try a sleighride dinner?  Ride in an open sleigh pulled by a snow cat to a cabin in the woods.  There you will join Chef Chris Schlaudecker for a meal of his own design.  Some treats might include Colorado elk, roasted duck or Black Pearl Scottish Salmon.  A full bar and wine list are also available.  After your dinner, take the sleigh back to the base area.  Sleighride dinners are available Wednesday through Saturday evenings.  Advance reservations are required and can be made by calling 970-349-4554.

People often ask me “what makes Crested Butte special?”  It is hard to put into words, but Uley’s is part of the charm of Crested Butte for visitors, locals and second homeowners.  Uley’s replaced the old Twister Warming Hut, but the building design and decor harken back to reflect the history of this area and the tough settlers who lived and worked here.  Some of the other ski resort towns in Colorado have their roots in gold and silver mining – Crested Butte was as a coal mining town.  In many ways the character and attitude of the early ranchers and miners has transcended time.  In Crested Butte the skiing is great, the scenery is awesome, the recreational activities in the Gunnison Valley are endless, and the people are warm, friendly and real.  Come into a place like Uley’s Cabin and enjoy a fine meal with family and friends.
