Chris Kopf first arrived in Crested Butte in 1999 and purchased a second home with his brother Rick, and spent a decade going back and forth from Dallas.
Chris managed to convince his wife, Francene, and their three teenage daughters to move to Crested Butte full-time, and so in June of 2009 Kopf got his real estate license and the family pulled-into town. “It was a great transition and we have embraced the mountain lifestyle. We recently completed a major remodel of our home after 20 months we have moved back in – and is great to host family and friends here in Crested Butte!”
Kopf had a successful career in technology sales and management and a marketing and real estate business with a partner. Kopf landed his real estate license in 2009 and, in spite of the recession, began making massive strides in the industry. In three years, he ranked among the top 10 local brokers. In four years, he had become the top agent in Crested Butte. He ensconced himself in the community, supporting local businesses and organizations, volunteering at Tour de Forks for the Center for the Arts, and at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory as well as becoming president of the Crested Butte Rotary Club.
Now, in 2024, his awards and accolades are almost too numerous to count. The latest among them is the prestigious International Society of Excellence award, given selectively to only the top sales associates out of over 101,000 Coldwell Banker agents around the world—placing Chris in the top of the elite agents (higher than the top one half of one percent of all Coldwell Banker brokers in the world).
How do you predict the Crested Butte real estate market will evolve in the next year?
“We have seen the market react to a rise in interest rates which has lead to a shift in the Crested Butte Real Estate market. We transitioned from a significant rise in demand, transactions, and price points to a period of stabilization – a plateau. We continue to see lots of new custom homes being built and there is still strong buyer demand in Crested Butte. Sellers who price their homes to the current market will be rewarded.
Compared with other ski resort markets, Crested Butte is a very good value. I believe we will have a pent-up demand for the remainder of this Winter – and this Summer we’re going to see a very active market again.

We generally have a seasonal trend where new homes come on the market in the springtime in anticipation of summer buying season, and I have had a number of homeowners preparing for putting their homes on the market.
One trend that is definitely emerging is the number of people re-setting their expectations and purchasing a home to update and remodel, or a parcel of land to build on.
If buyers can’t find the home they want in their criteria, buying a piece of land to build your dream home for many could be a great option. I tell clients: “You may not be putting your head on a pillow for a few years, but you’re still getting in and creating the foundation for that lifetime of memories.”
What is Your Passion?
Fly fishing here in the Crested Butte area is my passion. I have learned that there are hundreds of detailed skills needed in order to successfully present a fly to a trout in moving water, to hook a trout when he so subtly strikes, and then to successfully net, handle and safely release a trout back into the river or stream.
The trout I am holding in the photo is a very rare Palomino trout caught in the summer of 2022 on the East River here in Crested Butte.

I had 30 years of sales and marketing business experience before I got my real estate license – working in the start-up tech world, and being a business owner. I love Crested Butte, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have great clients to work with – and my wife Francene and I have made many friendships.
Because I was previously a second homeowner here for 10 years, I understand the many questions a couple is thinking. We also bought and sold a few properties – so I was a seller as well.
I have had the opportunity to work with hundreds of clients and understand details and emotions on the client level. Also, I think people like to do business with people they know and like and trust. I’ve been involved in the community and gotten to know a lot of people, I have supported local businesses and a lot of nonprofits. It has been very rewarding to be able to give back in so many ways.”
