People often ask me Why Crested Butte is a Beloved Tourist Town and a Haven for Second Homeowners? Nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains at the end of the road, Crested Butte is hard to get to, but often described as a hidden gem. The Crested Butte area sits at the North end of the Gunnison valley and is surrounded by US Forest Service and BLM Land. The surrounding mountain peaks are stunning – and the recreational opportunities are endless.
From our local Gunnison / Crested Butte Tourism Association website:
“The Gunnison Valley is famous for both summer and winter outdoor recreation. In summer, explore the two million acres of public lands by hiking and mountain biking. In winter, alpine skiing at Crested Butte Mountain Resort is unmatched. There are dozens of miles of scenic cross-country ski trails, too. You’ll find great restaurants, shopping, arts and events in the valley’s unique mountain towns.”

My wife Francene and I were second-homeowners here for 10 years before moving our family here from Dallas in 2009. Our three daughters were in the 7th, 8th and 10th grades when we moved here – and we embraced the mountain lifestyle and the Crested Butte Community.
Historic Crested Butte is our picturesque town, with its charming buildings and homes laid out on a grid of streets on the valley floor. Mt. Crested Butte is just 3 miles away and the heart of the winter alpine skiing destination operated by Vail Resorts International. The Crested Butte area attracts tourists year-round. It’s a place where the beauty of nature meets the warmth of a close-knit community, making it an irresistible destination for both visitors and second homeowners.
Crested Butte A Year-Round Destination
Crested Butte’s allure lies in its ability to offer something for everyone, regardless of the season. Whether it’s the vibrant wildflowers that blanket the valleys in the summer or the pristine snow that transforms the town and mountains into a winter wonderland, Crested Butte never fails to captivate.
Crested Butte has often been called “The last great ski town in Colorado”
Summer in Crested Butte
Summer in Crested Butte is a time of vibrant colors and outdoor adventure. The town is known as the “Wildflower Capital of Colorado,” and it’s easy to see why. The hills and meadows explode with a kaleidoscope of colors, making it a paradise for hikers, mountain bikers, and photographers. Since 1983 Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association (CBMBA) has been creating, maintaining, advocating for, and putting mad love into 450+ miles of singletrack around Crested Butte. Classic trails such as 401, Lupine, Snodgrass, Lower Loop, and Upper Loop offer breathtaking views for hikers or bikers.
The Club at Crested Butte is a great amenity here in Crested Butte. It is a public/private club with a great 18 hole Robert Trent Jones, Jr. golf course, restaurant, bar, pool, fitness and tennis facilities. Members of the Club at Crested Butte also enjoy the Ski Club (formerly known as the Slopeside Club) in Mt. Crested Butte – offering parking, ski lockers, ski valet, and food and bar service.
Water activities are also popular during the summer months. Paddle boarding, and fly fishing are common pastimes on the Slate River, East River, Taylor River, Gunnison River, and nearby lakes and reservoirs. Rafting and Kayaking are popular on the Taylor River, with some extreme kayaking enthusiasts who come to run some of the waterfalls and technical creeks during the Spring run-off.
Autumn in Crested Butte
My favorite time of the year are the months of September, October and beginning of November before the serious snow starts to fly. The autumn colors start to show up around the middle of September and are spectacular. It is a slower pace in the fall and a great time to be in Crested Butte.
Winter in Crested Butte
When winter arrives, Crested Butte transforms into a snowy haven. Christmas time is magical here in Crested Butte. You will find some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the country. Crested Butte Mountain Resort is renowned for its challenging terrain, particularly its expert-level slopes, which attract thrill-seekers from around the world. Vail Resorts International operates the ski resort, and Crested Butte is one of the 36 owned and operated resorts in the U.S.
Beyond skiing and snowboarding, winter activities in Crested Butte include over 50 kilometers of groomed Nordic ski trails, making it a hotspot for cross-country skiing enthusiasts. One of the favorite events in the winter is the Alley Loop – this brings in many competitive and recreational Nordic skier visitors.
The Appeal for Second Homeowners
.
Crested Butte isn’t just a tourist destination; it’s also a beloved retreat for second homeowners. The reasons why so many choose to invest in a second home here are as varied as the people themselves, but several key factors stand out.
A Sense of Community – One of the most compelling reasons people love Crested Butte is the sense of community. Our community is diverse – and second homeowners are a key part of what makes Crested Butte work. I have built my real estate business around understanding and providing superior service to the Crested Butte Second Homeowners.
- Being a Crested Butte Second Homeowner is a unique opportunity.
- You are creating a lifetime of memories.
- You get to work remotely – and play here.
- You want more than just a house somewhere in the mountains – you are creating friendships.
- You selected Crested Butte because it offers extreme skiing, and epic adventures.
I work with couples that are committed to impacting their families through lifestyle choices. I help them understand their goals, timelines and focus on what is most important. I help my clients to understand their options, and to make informed decisions.
You are committed to building a life that matters. A life driven by purpose. A life fueled by passion. You are committed to being part of the Crested Butte community – to be plugged-in. To give back with your time, skills, effort or money. You build lasting relationships and friendships.
The Center for the Arts was built with 92% fundraising from the second homeowner community – and cornerstone in the community for all. Unlike larger, more commercialized ski towns, Crested Butte has managed to maintain its small-town charm. The community is tight-knit, welcoming, and full of character. Local events, such as the Center for the Arts Alpenglow Concert series, Crested Butte Arts Festival, Crested Butte Bike Week, the Vinotok Fall Festival, and annual Christmas and New Year’s eve events foster a sense of belonging and provide plenty of opportunities to connect with neighbors.
Natural Beauty and Outdoor Recreation
The stunning natural beauty and the endless opportunities for outdoor recreation are major draws. For those who enjoy an active lifestyle, Crested Butte is a playground. Hiking, mountain biking, fishing, golf, skiing, and snowboarding are just the beginning. The surrounding wilderness offers endless exploration opportunities, making it an ideal location for nature lovers and adventure seekers.
Crested Butte Real Estate Investment Potential

.
From a financial perspective, Crested Butte is also an attractive option. Real estate in this region has proven to be a solid investment, with property values showing steady appreciation over the years. The town’s unique combination of natural beauty, recreational opportunities, and community appeal makes it a desirable location for both permanent residents and second-homeowners.
A Getaway from Urban Life
For many visitors and second homeowners, Crested Butte offers a much-needed escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The town’s remote location provides a peaceful and serene environment, perfect for relaxation and unwinding. Yet, despite its secluded feel, Crested Butte offers all the amenities and conveniences one might need, including excellent dining options, locally owned boutique shops, recreation, adventure and cultural events. Why Crested Butte is a Beloved Tourist Town and a Haven for Second Homeowners – I often say the biggest reason is Crested Butte offers the opportunity to create a lifetime of memories for you, your family, friends and clients you share this special place with.
Preserving the Character of Crested Butte

.
Despite its growing popularity, efforts are continually made to preserve the unique character of Crested Butte. The town has strict building codes and land-use regulations designed to protect its historic charm and natural environment. These measures ensure that Crested Butte remains a special place, both for those who live there year-round and those who visit or own a second home.
Crested Butte is a tourism-based economy – the income for the town of Crested Butte comes from sales tax revenue, various fees, including a 3% transfer tax on the sale of a home or parcel of land. The town could not function if not for the tourist and second homeowner dollars that flow into their coffers.
Crested Butte is a tourism-based economy and the strict building codes, plus environmentally sensitive measures have resulted in increased building costs. These increased costs have had a trickle-down effect on the bottom line for locally owned businesses – and the workers they need to run their based businesses.
The changes in building codes have increased significantly the cost to remodel and update a restaurant – one local owner told me: “…it does not pencil out and without a partner / investor the project would have never even started”.
Another good friend and local business owner who has a permanent “Help Wanted” sign posted, said that he has people come into his restaurant and ask to fill-out an application – he says the conversation is usually the same “come back when you have found a place to live…”. It is certainly an issue everywhere – but without hourly workers, local businesses are unable to be open every day of the week. The fixed costs are the same – and the lack of business means the prices go up for goods and services for everyone… There are great efforts being made to catch-up and attempt to build affordable housing. There are a number of projects on the horizon, in Crested Butte, Mt. Crested Butte and just South of downtown Crested Butte, which is great.
Conclusion Why Crested Butte is a Beloved Tourist Town and a Haven for Second Homeowners
Crested Butte is more than just a tourist town; it’s a place that captures the heart and soul of everyone who visits. Its stunning landscapes, vibrant community, and year-round recreational opportunities make it an ideal destination for tourists and a beloved haven for second homeowners. Whether it’s the allure of the wildflower-strewn meadows in summer or the thrill of the ski slopes in winter, Crested Butte offers an unparalleled experience that continues to draw people back, time and time again. This unique blend of natural beauty, community spirit, and recreational opportunities ensures that Crested Butte will remain a cherished destination for years to come.
