Get Your Big Duck Crested Butte Rotary – 2024 will be our 6th Year to run BIG DUCKS in the Crested Butte/Mt. Crested Butte Rotary Club annual Duckie Race.

I am super excited to announce that our goal for 2024 is 50 BIG DUCKS in the race- which will generate $25,000 that we give away for local kids College Scholarships, and to support the youth in our community!

We had a huge increase in families getting BIG DUCKS last year – but also many businesses and non-profits. We had 2 College decorated BIG DUCKS this year – University of Oklahoma and Alabama! (a great idea for your BIG DUCK Next year)

Thanks to local artist Blair Garth for being our Art Contest Judge again this year! These BIG DUCKS can be decorated by you with the name of your company or your kids or grandkids names or whatever you wish. They will run in the race and you will retain your duck following the race as a reminder of the event.

and I am thankful for my Operation BIG DUCK Co-Chair Bill Peatross (we wager $20 each year on who’s BIG DUCK will win – Bill’s BIG DUCK won this year, record Kopf: 4-Peatross: 1).

A great fun way to give back to the Crested Butte community and help support the Youth through our annual efforts to fund local non-profits with emphasis on Youth, and of course we give away college scholarships to local Crested Butte Community School graduates!

For decades, the Rotary Club of Crested Butte has been granting graduating high school senior scholarships to worthy recipients in the valley. Our primary source of funds for those scholarships has been revenues produced from our annual duck race. I suspect that you’ve bought duck race tickets in the past and, for that, thank you!

4 Years ago while brainstorming other ways we can raise money to give back in the community – we decided to launch OPERATION BIG DUCK and make a fun way for people to be able to see their Duck in the Race. By decorating your BIG DUCK – you get entered into the Art Contest – and you can see your BIG DUCK racing down Coal Creek.

Decorate Your BIG DUCK Video Overview

BIG DUCK Questions:

Q: “I’d like to get a BIG DUCK but won’t have the opportunity to decorate it.”

A: Not a problem. We have a local artist that will decorate your duck for you. You can provide whatever names or theme you want on your duck and our local artist will handle it for you.

Q: “I won’t be at the race, so how will I get possession of my BIG DUCK?”

A: Not a problem. You provide me that address to which you want your BIG DUCK shipped and I’ll ship it to you after the race.

Q: “What does the Money go toward?”

A: “We give the money back to the Community with emphasis on the YOUTH. With your help we have given away $25,000 per year to deserving Crested Butte kids for College Scholarships. When my daughter Shelby graduated from CB Community School she had a class size of 22 – now the average classes sizes are around 70 Graduating Seniors… So we need to find ways to raise more money – and OPERATION BIG DUCK is a great way for you to help us!!

BIG DUCK RACE 2024

Stay tuned – we will have some great announcements and prizes for 2024… There will be 50 BIG! DUCKS allowed in the race in 2024 – cut-off date for sales is August 1, or when sold-out!
