Crested Butte High School Ranks #6 in Colorado
Crested Butte is a great place to be a kid, and the Crested Butte Community School is a great school for kids. US News and World Report recently ranked the top schools in the Nation – and Crested Butte Ranked #318 out of over 19,400 High Schools in the US and #6 out of 363 High Schools in the State of Colorado.
The U.S. News rankings include data on more than 19,400 public high schools in 50 states and the District of Columbia. Schools were awarded gold, silver or bronze medals based on their performance on state assessments and how well they prepare students for college. To produce the 2014 U.S. News & World Report Best High Schools rankings, U.S. News teamed up with the Washington, D.C.-based American Institutes for Research, one of the largest behavioral and social science research organizations in the world.
AIR implemented the U.S. News comprehensive rankings methodology, which is based on the key principles that a great high school must serve all of its students well, not just those who are college bound, and that it must be able to produce measurable academic outcomes to show the school is successfully educating its student body across a range of performance indicators.

People often ask me “what makes Crested Butte special?” It is hard to put into words, but Crested Butte Community School is part of the charm of Crested Butte. There are plenty of luxury homes and high-end ski-in / ski-out condos at the base area, but unlike some of the other ski resort towns in Colorado that have their glitsy roots in gold and silver mining – Crested Butte was as a coal mining town. In many ways the character and attitude of the early ranchers and miners has transcended time – this is a working community that likes to have fun – and that is also apparent in the fabric of the Crested Butte Community School. In Crested Butte the skiing is great, the scenery is awesome, the recreational activities in the Gunnison Valley are endless, and the people are warm, friendly and real – AND the local school is AWESOME.
I was once a Crested Butte Second Homeowner – and moved my family from Dallas, TX to Crested Butte full-time in 2009. The Crested Butte Community School was a huge part of our decision. It has been a great move for our family – and our 3 daughters have benefited in many ways from this warm community.
