Races & Events:

The Crested Butte Nordic Center also hosts many races and events throughout the year, including the fan favorite Alley Loop.  Crested Butte’s most classic event will take place in just over 2 weeks, on Saturday, February 1st.  Part of the American Ski Marathon Series and an American Birkebeiner qualifying race, the Alley Loop is also Crested Butte’s largest costume party and biggest Nordic event of the year. The Alley Loop’s unique course starts and finishes in the heart of downtown Crested Butte at Second and Elk. In between it meanders through snow-lined alleys, behind false-fronted stores and restaurants, over footbridges and alongside residences. The adult races, longer than 5k, head out to the expertly groomed Nordic trails on the pristine outskirts of Crested Butte.  In addition to the fun races for all ages and abilities, the event also features a Friday night pub-ski crawl and an awards ceremony on Saturday with great prizes and a raffle.

Racers, register early, online at http://cbnordic.org/alley-loop-nordic-marathon/

Crested Butte Alley Loop Nordic Race EventThe Alley Loop requires a huge amount of community support to pull off and we need all of the help that we can get. Volunteer positions include: course marshals, aid stations, set-up, break-down, start finish, runners, awards ceremony, and beer garden. Come join in on the fun and help your local non profit Nordic ski area at the same time! Have any friends that may want to volunteer with you? Sign them up too!  If you plan on doing the race, YOU CAN STILL VOLUNTEER before and after. Please email events@cbnordic.org to volunteer!

GORE-TEX® Grand Traverse – not for the faint of heart this heralded ski race goes from Crested Butte to Aspen.  It starts at midnight.  It is 40+ miles up and over the Elk Mountain range, often in sub-zero temperatures.  In this extreme endurance event, racers climb more than 7,800 vertical feet and navigate in a self-supported backcountry race that tests them physically and mentally. To maintain safety in the backcountry, racers compete in teams of two and are required to carry mandatory gear. Held annually since 1998, it’s earned a reputation as a true test of toughness for elite local, national and international athletes.

My brother Rick and I competed (and finished!) in this event in 2011 – and for a full description of our adventure see my Elk Mountain Grand Traverse post.

Magic Meadows Yurt Dinners  – When the full moon rises, the Magic Meadows turn into a luminescent wonderland, with our back-country yurt nestled right in the middle. There, you can enjoy one of our gourmet yurt dinners; a five course meal in a spectacular setting.  This is a great venue for family, friends or clients to enjoy a special evening in Crested Butte.

Meet and Ski with the Gray Hares of Crested Butte – this  group of 35+ individuals known for their interest in staying in shape, their love of Nordic skiing, and their desire to meet other people and have fun in the prime of their lives.  They combine this zest for life with activities that are designed to give back to the community. They meet 10:00 am every Wednesday at the Center, starting in December. See more info on the Nordic Center website.

The Crested Butte Nordic Center also is producing some top ranked Jr. Nordic skiers – this is one more thing that makes Crested Butte a special place.  Often referred as “the last great Colorado ski town” Crested Butte has a great history of nordic skiing.
