Video Interview: Builder Mike Wright, Custom Home Wilder on the Taylor I recently got the opportunity to talk with Mike Wright owner of Wright Angle Construction in Crested Butte Colorado to talk about building a custom home here in the Crested Butte Area. Mike just completed the guest home for one of my clients – Mike & Tiffiny West at the Wilder on the Taylor. Mike stressed the importance of selecting a builder you are comfortable with as most second-homeowners are not going to be on-site very often. Mike stressed the importance of using technology and photos and video to communicate quickly with clients how the home is progressing and if there are decisions to be made – the client can be well informed and see what the builder is seeing.
It takes a lot of work and attention to detail to turn a design of a house into a mountain home in Crested Butte, Colorado. As Mike Wright discussed in the video interview snow plays a big part in the design, engineering and construction so to minimize the impact of snow loads, and to shed snow properly away from the home, driveways, decks and walkways. Sunlit Architecture designed this home at Wilder on the Taylor and they were focused on a rustic design with re-claimed timbers and stone that matched the feel of the setting at the ranch, as well as orientating the home to capture the views of the river. Location, style, and layout are important, but the design, selection of materials, and finish-out make it special. Good interior design for a second home is not as easy as it looks either, and that is one reason Ansley Interiors in historic downtown Crested Butte has been successful. Design Guidelines – It is important to understand the concepts and details of the design guidelines for the development or subdivision. It can be helpful to look at other examples of homes in the development and many times it can be fun to get ideas from the existing homes and work with the architect to provide input on the design, features, materials, and look and feel of the home. The design guidelines will call out the intent of the developer and HOAs desires but also will provide significant details on site plan, set-back, building heights, minimum and maximum square footage, exterior materials, colors and more… I work with many affluent clients who come to realize that their second home in Crested Butte will be used differently than their home back in the city because they will likely be hosting family, friends and clients in both the Winter and Summer. Luxury homes in the Crested Butte area require specific design input to ensure that they will look good and function well. It is important to select the home that will accommodate you, your family, your pets, and your visitors. The interior design approach for a ski-in / ski-out home on Mt. Crested Butte may be different than a home on the located on the golf course in the Skyland area or a smaller home in historic downtown Crested Butte or a riverfront home at the Wilder on the Taylor ranch. The bedrooms and common areas should work for the size and type of groups that will be visiting and/or staying in your home.
