About Crested Butte Ski-in Ski-out Homes
There is nothing quite like the luxury of saying, “I’m going to make 2 more runs, then I will see you back at the house”, or “You go ahead, I have 30 more minutes on this conference call, then I will meet you at the base area at 10:30 am”. Everyone has different skiing motivations, and a “Powder Day” can be a game-changer. Some skiers will want to get out early to try to be on the first chair, others will want to sleep in and then ask where all the groomed runs are. Either way, if you have a group, you will have different skiing abilities and motivations, as well as people on different schedules. “Ski-in/out” and “skier access” gives you and your guests flexibility. Buyer beware – you will want to triple check the skiing access to inspect what you expect is reality. It may be a long walk uphill in ski boots and carrying skis. Some homes may offer the potential to ski back to the house at the end of the day, but it may be an expert run through the trees if the conditions are just right. The closer the home or condo is to the slopes, the more the luxury of skier access and the expensive the real estate. Crested Butte CO Real Estate offers many options for the skier access and ski-in ski-out homes.
The major Subdivisions in Mt. Crested Butte that offer Ski-in/Out and Skier Access include:
Prospect – This subdivision was designed around skier access and with the Prospect lift running through the development and the many ski-ways under the road. The Prospect subdivision offers a premier skier’s development, including commanding views up and down the East River valley and surrounding mountains. There is a higher price to be paid here than many other areas. Many lots are for sale in this subdivision and some high-end beautiful homes.
Gold Link – Adjacent to the Homeowners Run with access to the Gold Link lift, there are a few homes in the Gold Link Subdivision that are literally on the fence line within steps of the groomed runs, and many within very short walking distance.
Elk Run – This subdivision was developed before the Crested Butte ski area had put in the Gold Link Lift and Homeowners Run. The majority of these homes have easy access and a level walk or ski between homes, or along the side of the road to and from their single family homes.
Timberland – Sitting at the top of Anthracite Drive this subdivision provides great skier access for the homeowner. Some homes are along the fence line and directly adjacent to the Homeowners Run, many require a short walk and all provide the ability to ski back to the house (or close to it).
The Summit – Located on the front of the mountain with main access to and from the Silver Queen lift (also you can ski down to the West Wall and Peachtree lifts). Depending where the home sits in this development will affect the effort required to walk to put your skis on and ski down to the lifts. Some beginner skiers may have a challenge skiing back to the home depending on conditions.

There are many Mt. Crested Butte condos and town homes at the base area as well that offer excellent skier access and some with true ski-in / ski-out. The West Wall Lodge is the newest property at the base area with a namesake lift that services these condos. Other condos and town homes with ski-in/out proximity include Columbine, Crested Mountain, Axtel, Emmons, Gateway, Silver Ridge, and Paradise… There are many other base area condos like The Lodge at Mountaineer Square, or the Grand Lodge that are just steps away.
Not everyone wants a ski-in/ski-out home. Crested Butte offers many great different locations and areas to build or buy a home. The majority of the homeowners may not want a home up on the mountain and so do not have the skier access convenience, so what do they do? There are many options; there are lots of lockers or club memberships available at the base area where you can keep your skis and all your gear (the Slopeside Club is one great choice). This can be a great option for ease of skier access, and with the free Mountain Express bus service between town and Mt. Crested Butte (and many routes on Mt. Crested Butte) this may overcomes most of the logistical challenges of getting you and your guests from your home to the chairlifts and back.
Call me to help you navigate the various options in skier access and ski-in ski-out here in Crested Butte. I appreciate the opportunity to help you find the perfect mountain home for you and your family!
