Best Hiking Trails For Fall Leaf Peeping in Crested Butte

Fall in Crested Butte: Best Trails for Hiking, Biking, and Leaf Peeping

When autumn arrives in Crested Butte, the mountains put on one of the most breathtaking shows in Colorado. Hillsides light up with golden aspens, trails are lined with shimmering leaves, and the crisp mountain air makes it the perfect season to get outside. The best time to view the fall leaves in Crested Butte is mid-late September, generally around the fall equinox. Whether you prefer to hike or bike, there are endless ways to soak up the fall colors—and fall in love with Crested Butte all over again.

Top Trails for Fall Colors

————————-

🍂 Kebler Pass

Often called one of the largest aspen groves in North America, Kebler Pass is a must-visit during peak leaf season. The canopy of golden aspens stretches for miles, making it a favorite for photographers, hikers, and bikers alike. Road cyclists and gravel riders especially love the steady climbs and rewarding views.

🍂 Snodgrass Trail

Just outside of town, Snodgrass offers a family-friendly hike or ride with stunning views of Mt. Crested Butte framed by glowing aspens. The rolling singletrack makes it a local favorite for both mountain biking and trail running during fall.

🍂 Dyke Trail

For those looking for more adventure, the Dyke Trail combines challenging terrain with dramatic views of the Ruby Range. It’s one of the most spectacular spots to see fall foliage, with fiery reds and golds blanketing the mountainsides.

—-

🍂 Lower Loop Trail

This easy-access trail near town follows the Slate River and winds through meadows and aspen groves. It’s ideal for a casual afternoon walk or bike ride when you just want to slow down and take in the beauty of fall.

🍂 Brush Creek to Strand Hill

A favorite among mountain bikers, this ride (or hike) showcases sweeping valleys lined with aspens. When the leaves are at their peak, it feels like riding through a golden tunnel.

More Than Just the Leaves: Vinotok Festival

Fall in Crested Butte isn’t only about the changing colors—it’s also about community. Around Fall Equinox each September, the town comes alive with Vinotok, a harvest festival at the end of September that blends local folklore, live performances, and plenty of revelry. Costumed characters parade through Elk Avenue, a big bonfire lights up, and the celebration culminates with the burning of “The Grump,” a symbolic act of letting go of worries from the past year. It’s quirky, heartfelt, and unmistakably Crested Butte.

Why Fall Is a Great Time to Call Crested Butte Home

For residents, fall means peaceful trails, lively community traditions, and the simple joy of stepping outside your door into a postcard-perfect scene. Whether you live in town with trails like the Lower Loop at your fingertips, in Skyland with access to the Deli Trail, or on the mountain near the Rec Path for biking and e-biking, Crested Butte makes it easy to connect with the outdoors in every season.

If you’re considering making Crested Butte your home, I have listings in town, Skyland, and Mt. Crested Butte that put you right in the heart of this autumn paradise.

Fall Leaves And Your Crested Butte Home

Call Your Property Manager

I recommend to my second-homeowner clients that they really will benefit from a local Crested Butte property manager. As fall rolls around and winter is around the corner it is time to think about leaves, changing colder temperatures and snow falling.

Leaves In Your Gutters?

Late September and October can bring some high winds and will blow the leaves off the trees. Very few homes in the Crested Butte area have gutters because the snow can rip them off the roof, but I have some clients with high-end copper gutters. The winds can blow the leaves into the gutters and nobody wants clogged gutters. This can lead to many problems. So, once most of your leaves have fallen it’s a great idea to clean your gutters out or have your property manager come do it. Clogged gutters can cause roof leaks, warped gutters, damaged windows and walls and more.

Roof Glue and Screw

Most homes in the Crested Butte area are metal – and if so you should have an annual “glue and screw” done. By the time the leaves are changing color and falling to the ground it is typically too late to get someone to inspect your roof and do a glue and screw.  Typically this is something you should schedule in the Spring or Summer to re-seat the screws that hold the roof down – the snow and ice on the roof in the winter can pull the screws out and it is a good idea to have someone up on your roof to check.  A Cedar shake roof is very popular in the Crested Butte area as well – until recently all homes in Skyland were required to have a cedar shake roof.  Autumn is also a time to ensure your cedar shake roof is prepared for the harsh weather in the winter – and it is common for ridge line shakes and shakes in the valleys to need replacement.
